Record low-unemployment in New York state

The Business Review (Albany)

Unemployment in New York state was at 4 percent in October, a number that the state Labor Department said Thursday matches the lowest-ever recorded level in April 1988.

Job gains were led by New York City, where the unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent. The Labor Department said that was the lowest jobless rate for the city on records that the department first started keeping in the mid-1970s.

The jobless rate for the state compared with the national rate of 4.4 percent for October.

Unemployment in New York in September was 4.4 percent and 5 percent in October 2005.

The private-sector job count grew by 5,900, or by .1 percent, to more than 7.1 million in October, the Labor Department said.

Private job growth upstate was uneven. For the period October 2005 to October 2006, Elmira registered the strongest growth of 2.4 percent followed by Kingston (plus 1.8 percent) and Glens Falls (plus 1.8 percent). Albany gained private jobs at a .8 percent rate over the year.

Utica-Rome (minus .7 percent), Rochester (minus .5 percent) and Buffalo (minus .4 percent) all lost private-sector jobs in the past year.

The Labor Department said the education and health services sector of the economy gained the most jobs over the last year followed by professional and business services and the leisure and hospitality industry.

Manufacturing continued to lose jobs, analysts said.

Jobless rates for counties in the Albany, N.Y., area in October were: Albany 3.3 percent; Columbia 3.2 percent; Greene 3.9 percent; Fulton 4.4 percent; Montgomery 4.5 percent; Rensselaer 3.3 percent; Saratoga 2.9 percent; Schenectady 3.5 percent; Schoharie 3.8 percent; Warren 3.6 percent, and Washington 3.1 percent.
